PERMANENT Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Christopher Kadio, has commended the Tanzania Health Promotion Support (thps) following an increase of Covid-19 vaccine uptake among the police and prison staff, their families, inmates and surrounding communities.

The THPS under the support of the USAID is implementing a five-year programme to support comprehensive HIV and tuberculosis prevention, care and treatment services in 64 police and prisons health facilities.

Mr Kadio said the health facilities have been of a great importance not only to policy and prisons families, but surrounding communities at large.

The facilities, of which 24 are in police and 36 in prisons, have contributed to increased vaccination coverage among the police and prisons staff, their families and surrounding communities.

Since June 2022, the USAID Police and Prisons Activity through the Global Vax support has vaccinated 92,204 police and prisons staff, their families, inmates and surrounding communities.

Mr Kadio urged the THPS to see possibility of extending such services to health facilities in immigration department and fire and rescue police force under his ministry.

He called for capacity building to the health facilities staff so that when the programme, which started in August 2020 to July 2025, winds up, they can run the project on their own.

He thanked the THPS for supporting the facilities with health equipment and capacity building training, calling upon the police and prisons staff to ensure they take good care and frequent maintenance of the facilities so that they could last longer.

Mr Kadio insisted on the need to undertake their duties diligently and ethically especially when issuing Covid-19 vaccination certificates.

The USAID Police and Prisons Activity is a five-year project implemented in 35 districts of Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar with aim of improving access, quality and strengthen HIV and TB prevention, care and treatment services in supported health facilities.

The Activity works to strengthen systems including capacity building to improve ownership and ensure future program sustainability, and ensure delivery of integrated, person-centred health services.

The meeting convened by the THPS aimed at giving stakeholders a chance to share updates on the program progress, challenges and proposed solutions to improve implementation for the coming years.

During the meeting the best performing police and prisons health facilities and individuals received awards in recognition of their contributions leading to the program’s achievement.

THPS is a indigenous NGO which works in partnership with the government with a goal to ensure accessible high quality health care services through the strengthening of health and community systems.
